ALEX JONES' PROMISING START ENDS IN D... Posted by / April 15,2009
The first meeting of the season at Oulton Park on Saturday started out well with an excellent qualifying placing Alex 6th and on 3rd row of the grid for Races 1 & 2.
Anticipation quickly turned to disappointment when a chaotic start to Round 1 saw the car in front unable to get away from the grid, and although Alex reacted quickly to avoid it, an ensuing collision saw him hit from behind, spun around, and then hit again.
He did manage to get away but now at the back of the pack and with damaged steering.
“The steering was bent and I had to wrestle to get the car to go where I wanted it to, but after using the kerbs over the first couple of laps I managed to straighten it out enough to start working through the field and managed to get up to 12th position.”
Easter Monday and Alex was looking forward to a good day’s racing, but the cards were obviously stacked against him this weekend.
From a great start in Race 2 up to P4 and ready to mount a challenge for third place, a spinner in the pack at Old Hall led to a collision which resulted in Alex, Patrick McKenna and Jordi Cunill all retiring from the race.
This also meant Alex would start Round 3 from the back of the grid, effectively ruining his chances of a top place.
Still, from the driver whose motto is “Never give up”, he made another flying start and was swiftly working his way up the field when a mechanical problem hit and he had to pull up.
"I’d managed to get up to 12th after starting 21st," he said. "I was going really well, really flying until a mechanical problem coming out of Shell put paid to my race."
Let’s hope he doesn’t break any more mirrors before the next meeting!
